While it’s fair to say that the closing ceremony by no means matched the visual spectacle of the Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony (were that even possible), there was certainly something for everyone on Sunday, and even the strongest of cynics would struggle to end the evening disappointed.

Rounding off the ceremony, London organising committee Chief Sebastian Coe said, “We lit the flame, and we lit up the world,” giving the perfect evaluation to what has surely been the biggest British success story of recent times.
